Zig Ziglar ~ Rest in Peace

If you can dream it, you can achieve it. You can have everything you want in life if you will just help other people get the things they want. ~ Zig Ziglar

I’ve always felt the true measure of success in life is in how many people you helped to Rudy & Zig conferencebecome successful. With that measure in mind, we have recently lost 2 of the great success leaders of recent history. A few months ago we lost Stephen Covey (7 Habits of Highly Effective People and many other bestselling books) after he suffered a severe head injury while mountain biking; and just last week we lost the great Zig Ziglar – author, salesman, mentor and motivational speaker.

If you never took the opportunity to hear Mr. Ziglar speak, you missed a real gem. Ziglar began public speaking in the late 1960’s, published his first book (See You at the Top) in 1975 and for over 4 decades as a public speaker, influenced millions and set about the business of improving lives. I had the great fortune of hearing Mr. Ziglar speak on a number of occasions, the last of which just 3 years ago when dementia was beginning to take over his mind, but even with his daughter accompanying him on stage to help him stay on track, he was still filled with energy and the desire to help others achieve more than they thought possible.

As my tribute to a mentor that had a great influence on my life, I thought this week I would reflect on some of my favorite Zig Ziglar quotes. The trouble was, narrowing the list down to a top ten was a daunting task, so I quite trying to narrow it down. I hope you enjoy these.

People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing. That’s why we recommend it daily.

Sometimes adversity is what you need to face in order to become successful.

You were born to win, but to be a winner you must plan to win, prepare to win and expect to win.

A lot of people quit looking for work as soon as they find a job.

I believe that being successful means having a balance of success stories across the many areas of your life. You cannot truly be considered successful in your business life if your home life is in shambles.

If you want to reach a goal, you must “see the reaching” in your mind before you will actually reach it.

It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action and discipline that enabled us to follow through.

Remember that failure is an event, not a person.

When you are tough on yourself, life is going to be infinitely easier on you.

You cannot tailor-make the situations in life, but you can tailor-make your attitude toward those situations.

The most important persuasion tool in your entire arsenal is integrity.

If you don’t see yourself as a winner, you can’t perform as a winner.

Rest in peace, Mr. Ziglar, and thank you for the great inspiration you have been to me and countless others.
