“Life is a series of adjustments; you can make changes along the way, but if you don’t start moving forward you’ll never get anywhere.” ~ Kimora Lee Simmons
Believe it or not, 2012 is already 1 quarter over. Only 3 short months ago, we began the year with new hopes, visions and goals. How are you doing so far? Have you given up on your 2012 goals? Don’t do that! Maybe it’s just time to make a few needed adjustments. Sometimes we set our goals too high, but that’s a good thing. It’s better to aim high and miss than to aim low and hit our target.
Now is a perfect time to look back at the past three months and see where are, where we should be, and what steps we need to take to get there. Reaching goals is like sailing. You never sail in a straight line from point A to point B, you make constant course corrections. Notice the word “constant”. You don’t want to get too far off track. It’s the same with reaching our goals. It is necessary to monitor where we are on a daily basis and make constant course corrections to reach our ultimate goal.
If the goals you set for this year are now looking more like fantasies, don’t give up! You don’t necessarily need a new set of goals, you just need to re-evaluate your game plan for obtaining your original goals. Ask yourself what has kept you from making the progress you set out to achieve. Ultimately, in most cases, you have to accept personal accountability and ask, “What have I not done correctly that has kept me from reaching my goals and what adjustments do I need to make moving forward?”
Learn from any mistakes you might have made so far this year in reaching your goals and adjust your program. Where did you get off track and why? If you are off track, chances are pretty good you were not documenting your daily progress. Journaling is a critical step in goal achievement. Maintaining a written record keeps you focused on the end result. It encourages you to make constant course corrections. Journaling also helps you adhere to and make adjustments to the T (time sensitive) in SMART goals.
Yes, it is the end of the 1st quarter, and we may be behind, but the game is far from over. How many times have you seen football or basketball teams be behind at the end of the 1st quarter but come back to win the game in high fashion? If 2012 isn’t producing the results you had hoped for, don’t stop! Just make some adjustments and move forward! Moving in the right direction is what it’s all about. Keep moving in the right direction and eventually you will reach your destination.
