Attention to Detail

“Character emerges from all the little things you were too busy to do yesterday but did anyway.” ~ Mignon McLaughlin

Are we doing the little things we are too busy to do? Do we stop to think that no matter how busy we think our lives are, we have the same number of hours in a day that others have, such as Mother Teresa, Albert Einstein, Michelangelo, Leonardo Di Vinci, Thomas Jefferson and Helen Keller. Time is the same for everyone of us. It’s how we choose to use that time that makes the difference.

When we choose to use our time focused on the little details, the big details just seem to come together. Sending “Thank You” cards, making collections calls, role playing your presentations, and going the extra mile to give outstanding customer service are all little things that will drive us to the big things; being where we want our stores to be and producing the results we want to produce. So my challenge is for everyone, the next time you don’t think there is enough time, is to ask yourself what kind of character you have.

If doing the little things will build the character you want to have, let’s get busy focusing on the little things that will make us all winners. I’m writing this from the business perspective, but this rule applies to all aspects of life? Do you want to be a better spouse? Then focus on the little things. Pick up your dirty socks. Put down the lid. Say, “Thank you” for a nice meal. Do you want to be a better parent? Then focus on the little things. Spend quality time with your children. Help them with their homework. Make reading a priority.

Paying close attention to the little things applies to every aspect of life and by making time to focus on the little things, you will build the kind of character of it takes to be successful.
